Wow! It never ceases to amaze me how incredible flying is!!! It seems magical that in 24 hours we went from this.....
And this.....
To this.....
And this!!!.....
We flew out of Toronto at 6:30 PM (their time) with Lufthansa airline. Wow! Can Air Canada ever learn a lot from this German airline!!!! They treated us like royalty, with all imaginable comforts including cocktails and hot hand towels (to wipe up) before supper, a full supper meal served with wine, an aperitif of either Baileys or Brandy, blankets, pillows, earphones and a large selection of movies, as well as breakfast in the morning!! The crew was incredibly friendly, competent and professional, making it as enjoyable a 7 hour flight as one can have!!
We arrived in Frankfurt at 8:30 AM (their time and 12:30 AM (our time) after watching the sun rise as we flew over England! It is amazing how sunrises look beautiful no matter where you are!! :) Frankfurt airport is HUGE! We had originally thought we would take a train into the downtown area for breakfast, but we actually felt really bagged, getting off the plane and decided to stay put, within the miles and miles of airport walls! The weather was cool, cloudy and a bit drizzly so we hung out, reading, walking, and scouting out some tasty treats like these creme filled crackle cakes.....
That we got at this bakery......
Ohhhh it was soooo good!! Not too sweet and really quite perfect with an abundance of the custard filling and a hot cup of tea!
We both slept a lot on the last leg of flying time, which was from Frankfurt to Lisbon. Lisbon, from the air, looks like a sea of terra cotta coloured roofs! Very European and inviting! We were advised to take a cab to our B&B which is near the Basilica do Estrela....our cab driver could not speak or understand English and did not know how to find this place! It was a bit of an adventure as he eventually made his way here, driving 140 km/hr, while skirting in and out of traffic on the main freeway roads! Needless to say, my anxiety level was pretty high and I began planning our hospital/trauma stay as well as our return to Canada as broken tourists!! :). I was sooo glad when we finally found our very quaint and classy guest house called "The House"!! It is its own 7 bedroom house within what looks like a simple apartment building. Looking at the building, you would never be able to guess what waits inside! Our room is very comfortable and the best feature of this guest house is the roof top terrace with a million dollars view of the city and shore line! Here are some pictures.....
Check out the lemon trees grown in planters on the terrace!!!
Plus, the view, from this roof top is amazing...
We went for a walk around the area, met a friendly young lady,in a park, who suggested a particular restaurant for supper, which she said was the 'real deal' in authentic, local food. We went and it was okay, but not really that great. We both had steak done different ways and they served it with anemic French fries and puréed spinach. The Appetizers were enjoyable and the creamy lentil soup won for being the best part of the meal! Afterward, we stopped at corner store, bought locally grown oranges and a $1.99 bottle of red wine!
Well.....It has been an AMAZING day of safe travel time and experiencing new sights, sounds, tastes and adventures!
It is time to hit the hay because tomorrow we have a lot we want to see and do!
Wow! It looks absolutely beautiful! "The House" looks like something out of a magazine! Enjoy your time in Lisbon... I can't wait to hear more!!!
