Serenaded in Santa Luzia

Wow! I bet you thought I wasn't here. Well, I've been here all along and everything Betty has told you is true. I didn't let her take a picture of the sunburned tops of my feet because I feel real dumb being in this wonderful climate and forgetting about sunscreen on a very tender part of my body.

Since there weren't any clouds and we didn't want to go to the beach we pedalled 20 minutes to the very sleepy village of Santa Luzia. Once again we were in a beautiful place. Lots of restaurants and bars for the tourists along the water and a river full of fishing boats.

We could have taken a ferry to another beach on the Ilha de Tavira but it was wonderfully hot and we needed to stay in the shade. Our picnic lunch resembled two vagrant travellers under a sunshade, on the promenade.......

We retreated back to Studio 39 for a siesta, after booking a table for a Fado (traditional music) show and supper at a restaurant called Casa do Polvo (house of Octopus) on Santa Luzia's Main Street.

What a great evening! It was like going to a house concert, at our house, without hosting. The musicians were fantastic! Stand up bass, classical guitar, and Portuguese guitar (a 12 stringed large mandolin), along with two soloists. All you could eat from appetizers to a main course followed by dessert and coffee/tea and an ounce of 'firewater' (fig booze that tastes like it sounds). They also refilled your wine decanters all night long. We were told this might be a 'tourista' attraction but, hey, we are resident-tourists as well as food and music lovers (and real lovers (-:) so, it was a wonderful date night!

This was an amazing band! We couldn't understand the lyrics but the instrumentals and the stage presence,of the singers, really mesmerized us as we sat on the deck with the sea breezes wafting over us. It was a wonderful evening being serenaded in Santa Luzia!! .........

The blue sky is amazing here. Clouds never seem to form......

A local told us that the south winds, from Africa, bringing hot air, have started and this will be the norm until the fall. The gentle winds, that are always blowing, really make this climate incredible!

Thanks for reading to the end of my first blog entry. It wasn't that hard. As you see some of today's explorations (via pictures), as you read this, thank Betty. I haven't mastered that part of storytelling yet (although any time you see Betty I took the picture (-:).

  1. I look forward every day to reading your journal entries and vicariously living through you. How nice to actually be able to settle in a place for awhile and truly let the ambiance sink in. Your picnic lunches make me drool on the keyboard. Love the jottings and the photos.
